AECOM Principal Environmental Scientist (Ecologist) in Hamilton, New Zealand

Job Summary

AECOM's Auckland Natural Resources team is involved in a number of transformational projects that will significantly shape Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) and other key locations around NZ, including the communities that many of us live in. We are looking for a talented and self-motivated Principal Ecologist to join our team and assist in the development and leadership of AECOM's thriving ecological consulting business for some of these exciting projects. A particular focus of the role will include the delivery of a large urban habitat restoration project requiring detailed knowledge of how to undertake restoration to ensure that existing ecological values are retained while enhancing the environment for native species.

This role will require the successful applicant to work closely with the client and other key stakeholders which is of significance to local iwi. The project involves long term monitoring to assess the effect that the restoration has on the natural environment, which could guide how restoration is undertaken in the long term.

Day to day, you will be responsible for:

  • Development of scopes for freshwater and terrestrial, fauna surveys/monitoring at a preliminary and detailed level.

  • Mentoring and supporting junior members of the team.

  • Working with and managing specialist sub-contractors.

  • Evaluation of ecological data, comparison with relevant standards or reference guidelines and interpretation of results.

  • Development and implementation of restoration strategies.

  • Provision of ecological advice in relation to statutory requirements.

  • Preparation and review of technical reporting.

  • Obtain new and repeat business through maintaining and developing internal and external client relationships.

  • Assistance with project and contract management, with a view to obtaining AECOM PM certification if desired.

Minimum Requirements

We are seeking a self-motivated individual with a strong client focus who is able to demonstrate:

  • 10+ years' experience in ecology

  • Knowledge and understanding of implementing an Ecological Impact Assessment to meet EIANZ guidelines

  • Knowledge of New Zealand's ecological context with emphasis on freshwater and terrestrial environments and the ability to apply this knowledge to determine environmental status, assessment of environmental effects and appropriate mitigation strategies

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in standard field investigation techniques, data collation, interpretation and reporting – terrestrial, aquatic ecology and fauna

  • Experienced as a member and also leading a multi-disciplinary project team

  • Open mindedness and enjoys challenges

  • Client focussed with experience in managing contracts and sub-contractors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Appropriate tertiary qualification – BSc or Msc in relevant discipline i.e. ecology, conservation, environmental science with ecology specialisation
